Headline data

Source: Office for National Statistics (ONS)

Geographical Area: United Kingdom

Unit of Measurement: GBP (£), Percentage of total expenditure (%)

Footnote: Some figures for expenditure by age and disposable income should be used with extra caution because they are based on fewer than 20 reporting households - these figures are specified in source 1. Data for 2001/02 to 2005/06 and 2014/15 to 2019/20 are shown in financial years. 2006 to 2013 data are shown in calendar years. The y axis does not go to 100% for ease of visualisation for the 'percentage of total expenditure' series.

This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from UK statistics closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from UK statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other UK-specific metadata information.

Other information

Please note, the proportion of population with large household expenditures on health as a share of total household expenditure or income (as defined by UN as greater than 10% and 25% of total household expenditure or income) is zero for the UK.

Headline household expenditure as a percentage of total household expenditure data is based on Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP) classification at 2019-20 prices.

Some figures should be interpreted with extra caution because they are based on fewer than 20 reporting households these are marked as low reliability in our downloadable source CSV. Alternatively, see the original source for further details.

Years 2006 to 2013 the survey was run on a calendar year basis instead of the standard financial year basis.

This indicator is being used as an approximation of the UN SDG Indicator. Where possible, we will work to identify or develop UK data to meet the global indicator specification. This indicator has been identified in collaboration with topic experts.
