Definitions

Deprivation decile - Deciles of the 2019 Index of Multiple Deprivation

The indices rank each upper tier Local Authority in England from most deprived to least deprived. Decile 10 represents the most deprived ten percent of upper tier Local Authorities in England whereas decile 1 represents the least deprived ten percent.

Available disaggregations

PHE data is available in the PHE Alcohol and drug misuse and treatment statistics for the number and percentage of adults (18+) and young people in treatment for substance use disorders (drug use disorders and alcohol use disorders) including by substance, sex, age, ethnicity, and disability status. This information is not presented here as we do not have estimates of prevalence of substance use disorders for these groups.

Proportion of dependent drinkers in treatment by deprivation decile is currently only available for 2018 to 2019.

Calculations

Proportion of dependent drinkers in treatment = (number of adults in treatment / estimated prevalence) x 100

Other information

Treatment centres from across England submitted their data to Public Health England (PHE). These treatment centres include community-based specialist drug and alcohol services, primary care services, residential rehabilition centres and inpatient units.

Double counting in the treatment figures may have occurred if individuals changed their Local Authority of residence during the year.

Data for Local Authories on the ViewIt platform are rounded to the nearest 5, so may not exactly sum to UK figures.

The Prevalence, trends and amenability to treatment report published by the University of Sheffield explains how alcohol prevalence estimates were calculated.

Data were collected from 1st April to 31st March each year.

Data follows the UN specification for this indicator. This indicator has been identified in collaboration with topic experts.
